How to Get a Student Visa for Luxembourg: A Step-by-Step Guide

Luxembourg is a beautiful European country. Luxembourg become a popular spot for students from all over the world. With high-quality universities and an amazing culture, Luxembourg is a great place to study. But first, you’ll need to apply for a study visa in Luxembourg. Don’t worry – here’s an easy guide to walk you through the process.

1. Types of Visas for Students

Depending on the duration of your studies, you may need one of two types of visas.

  • Short-Term Visa (C Visa): If your course lasts less than 90 days (like a summer school or language course).
  • Long-Term Visa (D Visa): This is the most common visa for international students, and it is for full-time students staying for more than 90 days.

2. Get Accepted by a University

The first step is you apply to Luxembourg universities. Then universities of Luxembourg accept you and give you the admission letter, which is very important for you because this letter proves that you are enrolled officially.

3. Gather Your Documents

Once you have your admission letter, you’ll need to collect these key documents:

  • Visa Application Form: fill out the student visa form 
  • Passport: your passport is valid for at least six more months.
  • Passport Photos: Recent biometric-style photos.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Show where you’ll be staying (like a dormitory or rented apartment).
  • Proof of Funds: You’ll need to prove that you can afford to live and study in Luxembourg. Bank statements or a scholarship letter work here.
  • Health Insurance: You’ll need to show proof of valid medical insurance for your stay.
  • Language Skills: If your program is educated in English, French, or German, you need to prove you can speak the language. Most important you speak English 
  • Criminal Record Check: In some cases, a police clearance certificate may be required.

4. Apply for Temporary Authorization to Stay

To study in Luxembourg you need to get something about permission to stay. You need approval from the Luxembourg immigration. And that permits you to stay in the country for your studies. 

5. Apply for Your Student Visa (D Visa)

Once you have your Temporary Authorization to Stay, then you can apply for your D Visa at the Luxembourg Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

When you go to the embassy, bring all your documents, including the Temporary Authorization to Stay, and be ready to pay the visa fee (around €50-€60).

6. Arrive in Luxembourg

Once your visa is approved, you can finally travel to Luxembourg! But, in one case you arrive, there are a few things that you still need to do:

  • Declare Your Arrival: Within 3 days of arriving, go to the local municipal office to let them know you’re there.
  • Medical Exam: You’ll need to get a medical check-up.
  • Residence Permit: If you study in Luxembourg you need to Apply for a residence permit, which will allow you to stay in Luxembourg for your studies.

7. Apply for Your Residence Permit

To get your residence permit, you’ll need to submit a few documents like:

  • Your enrollment proof from the university.
  • Results of your medical check-up.
  • Your visa and passport.
  • Proof of your accommodation and finances.

This permission is usually valid for one year and can be renewed every year while you’re studying.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Language Requirements: If your program is in French, German, or English, make sure you meet the language skills required for your course.
  • Part-Time Work: As an international student, you can work part-time in Luxembourg 
  • Health Insurance: If you’re from the EU, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If you are not from the EU, then you’ll get private health insurance.
